Your Business Survival Depends on Social Networking
|
By Graham Jones, Internet Psychologist
Before the Internet was a twinkle in an engineer’s eye, business depended on who you knew. If you wanted to know something you asked a colleague or friend – and if they didn’t know the answer, they knew someone who could help. If you wanted to find a supplier, you asked around – only resorting to The Yellow Pages if your colleagues couldn’t come up trumps. Then, along came the Internet and we all started turning to our new “best friend” – Google. Instead of asking colleagues and friends for information, we asked Google. However, frequently we don’t find what we want. Indeed, a recent study showed that four out of ten people are unable to find what they want using search engines. Furthermore, it seems that it takes us 11 hours a week on search engines to find what we are looking for. A day and a half for every person in your business, every week is being eaten up by search. How’s your productivity? However, at the same time as people are realising that search engines are not necessarily the answer to their prayers, they are discovering – once again – that other people are immensely helpful. Instead of searching for information, millions of people are now simply asking their online “friends” in Facebook or their “connections” in LinkedIn. Business is going back to the way it always used to work – asking other people. That means your business needs to be involved in social networks. Firstly, it will save your staff an immense amount of time. Ask a question – go back to work – get an accurate answer later from a Facebook friend. That’s so much quicker than using search, fruitlessly for hours on end. Secondly, if you’re not involved in social networks the people there will not be talking about you; they might not even know about you. You have, as the best competitions say, “got to be in it, to win it”. Businesses not using social networks will be less productive than businesses that do - and therefore less competitive. Plus, businesses outside of social networks will be less visible – and therefore less profitable. If you don’t get involved in social networking – and quickly – your business won’t succumb to the credit crunch. Instead, it will fall prey to the new way of doing business, which is the old way – person to person. Except this time, it’s online – so that’s where you need to be too. |
