1910 US President Wilson Turns on Statue of Liberty Lights |
President Woodrow Wilson turned on a new lighting system for the Statue of Liberty.
Having suffered lighting problems ever since its installation on Bedloe’s Island in 1886, the Statue of Liberty was fitted with 600 yellow tinted glass windows in 1916. From the presidential yacht, Mayflower, President Woodrow Wilson activated a new lighting system, which was a mixture of incandescent and electric lamps. This system survived until it was replaced in 1931 with a enlarged and purely incandescent system. |
