1409 University of Leipzig Opens
|
University of Leipzig opens. It initially consisted of four main faculties – theology, law, arts, medicine –, growing in its 600 year history to over 150 different institutes.
It is one of the oldest Universities in Europe and is perhaps most renowned for its faculty of medicine. It has a spectacular list of alumni, including Johann von Goethe (poet), Gottfried Leibniz (philosopher), Friedrich Nietzsche (philosopher), Ferdinand de Saussure (linguist), Robert Schumann (composer), and Richard Wagner (composer).
