1804 Napoleon Crowns Himself Emperor of France
|
Napoleon Bonaparte crowns himself Emperor of France in Paris, becoming the first French Emperor for a thousand years.
Napoleon used a foiled assassination attempt on his life as an excuse to justify the creation of a hereditary monarchy in France. During the ceremony, Napoleon had Pope Pius VII bless the Imperial regalia and then went on to crown himself Emperor before crowning his wife, Josephine, as Empress. In May of next year, Napoleon was crowned King of Italy. Napoleon was defeated at Waterloo by the Duke of Wellington and von Blucher in 1815. He was captured, imprisoned and then exiled to the island of Saint Helena in the South Atlantic Ocean. He later died in prison, supposedly of stomach cancer although some believe that he was poisoned with arsenic. For a detailed biography of Napoleon click here |
