1961 Fidel Castro Announces Cuba's Shift to Communism |
Fidel Castro announces that Cuba will adopt communism. Castro became Prime Minister of Cuba in 1959 after the resignation of Jose Miro Cardona.
Castro’s intelligence chief is known to have contacted the Russian KGB as early as July 1959, a move that resulted in the USSR sending advisors to Cuba to assist with the creation and organisation of the Committees for the Defence of the Revolution. In 1960, Cuba signed an agreement to buy oil from Russia, strengthening the two countries’ ties with each other. By the autumn of 1960, the US administration was secretly plotting to remove Castro from power, which resulted in the unsuccessful Pay of Pigs operation. After Castro repelled this US backed attempt to topple his government, he announced that Cuba would adopt communism as its political ideology, a move that resulted in the US’s imposition of an embargo on Cuba, which included the prohibition of travel by US citizens to the island.
