1973 Monica Seles

Monica Seles is a Hungarian-American tennis player who won nine Grand Slam titles, becoming the youngest woman ever to win the French Open in 1990.

In 1993, during a break in a quarter final match in Hamburg, a mad man rushed onto the tennis court and stabbed Seles between the shoulder blades.

It took Seles two years to recover from the incident, finally returning in 1995 to win the Canadian Open in her first comeback tournament.

Seles was one of the first female tennis stars to ‘grunt’ every time she hit a ball.
