Henry I of England was King of England from 1100 until his death. He was the third son of William the Conqueror and the first English King to have been born on English soil since the Norman Conquest of 1066. He snatched the throne from his brother Robert, who was away on the First Crusade at the time of their elder brother King William II’s death. He suffered succession problems when his eldest son, William, died in the wreck of the White Ship. He left the throne in his will to his daughter Matilda, but never had his wishes carried through due to their unpopularity with the ruling elite. The turmoil that ensued upon his death is known as the Anarchy. During his reign, he successfully reunited the realms of England and Normandy for the first time since his father’s death in 1087.
