David Ben-Gurion was the first Prime Minister of Israel after he helped the country gain independence from British mandated rule. He set up the Israeli Defence Force (IDF) after Israel’s War of Independence. He collaborated with the British and French governments after Egypt under Gamal Abdel Nasser announced the nationalisation of the Suez Canal. He offered to attack Egypt, which would then give France and Britain the excuse they needed to occupy the Suez Canal and take control of the vital shipping route. This fiasco is known as the Suez Crisis.
