The first World Disco Dancing Championships are held in London and won by Japan's Takaaki Dan.

By 1978, Dosco had reached fever pitch, encapsulated by the disco club Studio 54, which became famous world wide. Adding to the buzz around this musical genre, the release of John Travolta’s film ‘Saturday Night Fever’ was a massive hit.

Earlier in the year in June, New York declared a National Disco Week, and London Sponsor’s were quick to latch onto the craze, which was reaching its zenith, by sponsoring the World Disco Championships.
