1963 Kenya Gains its Independence
Kenya gains its independence from the United Kingdom.

The British had originally intended to hand over power to a moderate African government who remain supportive of British interests in the region.

Unfortunately for the British, the first direct elections for Africans to enter the Legislative Council, which were held in 1957, saw the rise to power of the Kenya African National Union of Jomo Kenyatta.

The Union formed a government shortly before Kenya gained its independence on December 12 1963.

Exactly a year later, Kenyatta became Kenya’s first President.
