1989 The Italian Government Announces Closure of Leaning Tower
(BogFoto)
The Italian government announced that after the Christmas holidays the Leaning Tower of Pisa was to be closed to the public over fears that the tower could topple over.
The tower is said to have begun its gradual lean after an Italian engineer excavated a walkway around its base, an action that caused flooding and weakened the already unstable base.
After two decades of work that was intended to stabilise the toppling tower, the site was closed to the public and the bells were removed from the top of the tower in order to cut down on the amount of weight.
Guy ropes were also attached to the third tier of the tower in an effort to prevent the structure leaning any further After another decade of stabilisation and reconstruction, the tower was again opened up to the general public in 2001.
