Who are ya Wayne Stansby... who are ya!
Today marked the dawn of a new season for New Windsor Eagles. At the start of 2008-09 season we were lucky enough to bag a ranger for training. Steve is based at the Combermere Barracks in Windsor, part of the Household Cavalry Regiment. Unfortunately, he has had to go off to Africa, jungle training for the spring and then when he gets back will be off to Afghanistan. This meant we were back to yours truly coaching the lads in a very random way. They are not 7 anymore, they are 9 and need more skills training from someone who knows their left foot from their right. Luckily for us, one of our dads is based at the barracks and has managed to find us a qualified coach who spent 10 years at the top of his game playing for the army team. Bring on Wayne Stansby. The boys have enjoyed a few of weeks training, mostly indoors because of the weather and today we enjoyed the benefit of his coaching, a 1:1 draw with West Drayton Explorers. Not just any old team but the top team in our division who have won 75% of their games and gave us an 8:3 drumming last time we met on a very cold, rainy day in West Drayton at the end of November. This game has secured my shift in role to match journalist and number 2, excellent... the boys are in with a fighting chance of finishing the season on high and tracking a fantastic 2009-10 as the temperature rises! |
