Twittering noises in the Old Fire Station
|
On Tuesday 31 March, Windsor’s fashionable Arts Centre, the Fire Station, was the venue for an informal half-day seminar entitled ‘Online Marketing Magic – Strategic Product Levitation’. Spooky, or what?!
This feast of web-based wizardry was presided over by that affable Gandalf of Cyberspace himself - Jon Davey of Liaise Online, one of the best-connected members of the Berkshire business community. Assisting him in revealing the powerful benefits of social networking in promoting your businesses and gaining customers were a number of recognised experts in their fields, including internet psychologist Graham Jones, Mark ‘The Blog Coach’ White, and Tom Evans, IT and Ecademy expert turned Bookwright. Their central message was that the web is changing radically with the rise of social networking and Web 2.0 It’s less and less about businesses presenting their wares for potential customers to find via search engines, and more about sharing. This includes your customers sharing their opinions of your products and services online, and then buying (or not!) based on recommendations from their peers, and their direct interactions with you. Manage this effectively, and you will dominate your market. So, get yourself up to speed with Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and whatever the next big thing in social networking turns out to be – or get out of the kitchen! Our other speakers were the internationally famous musician and producer Paul ‘JazzMouse’ Fawcuss, puppeteer and coach Jo Bryant, Alice Elliot of Design Your Marketing, and Dan Eastmond, MD of the Fire Station itself. They all generously shared (key word) their experiences of using social media to attract and retain customers for the benefit of all. The sheer volume of useful information imparted in this entertaining and interactive forum was staggering, and worth far more than the price of admission (not that we’re complaining, Jon). As a social networking ‘near-virgin’ (!) I had several ‘lightbulb’ moments during the course of the event, and judging from the reactions from the floor, I certainly wasn’t alone. Other impressions which will be hard to erase include our presenter Jeff’s fixation with his gorilla suit (not to mention the giant walrus – what was he on?) and keeping my hand in with Mrs PottyTree (a puppet, I hasten to add). More please, JD! Report by Keith Grover, Copywriter. |
