Social networking sites
69% Employers lock down social networking sites in the workplace
7 in 10 bosses have placed a ban on websites such as Facebook in the workplace according to Peninsula (employment law firm).
It would seem that Facebook and other social network sites are being targeted by employers and sited as a distraction in their place of work.
Peninsula researcher’s have found that a large majority of bosses have simply decided to ban Facebook and other social network sites, while another method has been to let employees use the internet during lunch breaks.
Although this tactic is defiantly a more employee friendly way of handling the situation it means constant monitoring to ensure workers are not abusing the systems. Employers are actively fighting the battle against use of social websites in the workplace, a practice that is costing them an estimated £30.8 billion a year.
The abuse of unauthorised internet use seems to be an ever growing problem that is not just confined to social network sites but instant messaging, email and other types of internet mis-management.
Employers need to enforce the message that misuse of company equipment will not be tolerated. And while businesses may wish to be more flexible they need to show that employees found breaking the rules are being disciplined as per company disciplinary procedures.
