With the amazing popularity of sites like MySpace and YouTube, the social networking phenomenon really gained ground last year. And it’s not just restricted to the adult demographic (more than half MySpace users are 35 or older), as a new generation of networking sites have sprung up aimed at the pre-teen group.
Pre-teens (or ‘tweens’ in marketing-speak) have their own social networks in the form of websites like Club Penguin, Habbo Hotel, Nicktropolis, Whyville.net, and Imbee.com – all offering opportunities to network online. Some offer fantasy worlds while others stick to music and blogging.
The sites have high security although parents are usually advised to limit the amount of time their child spends ‘in world’. Club Penguin is a favourite, with its tuxedoed birds as avatars. The site had 4 million visitors last month.
