Mobile porting knowledge gap
There is a mobile number porting knowledge gap for customers, a survey has found.
Research released by uSwitch.com has found 5.5 million customers were unaware that they can transfer their mobile number when they change networks.
A further four million think the process is too complex.
Head of communications services Steve Weller commented: "The number porting process in the UK is archaic so it's no wonder that consumers are being put off."
Transferring numbers takes two hours in Ireland but five days in England, he added.
Even so, nine million Brits have made the switch over the past 12 months, with those aged 18 to 24 the most likely to change telecoms networks.
Ofcom has outlined plans for telecoms operators to complete transfer requests in a much quicker time of two days from April 1st 2008. However, telecoms companies in England only have to catch up with Irish speeds of transferring numbers in two years time.
