Mobile firm looks 'to invest in cycling clean up'
The mobile operator T-Mobile has announced that it is to invest money set aside to sponsor German television coverage of the Tour de France in drugs testing instead.
A number of riders have recently come forward to suggest that they may have used performance enhancing substances during the 90s, something which has led the mobile firm to invest in cleaning up the sport.
According to reports, T-Mobile's deal with two commercial channels in Germany (ARD and ZDF) was worth around $1.33 million (£0.67 million).
T-Mobile formerly raced under the name Telekom and it was during this period that the riders have suggested they may have cheated to win the French event.
A spokesman for the firm, Christian Frommert, stated that anti-doping procedures will now be aided in the bid to improve racing.
"We want to support the fight against doping and give the money to Germany's anti-doping agency rather than advertise," Mr Frommert told the Associated Press.
More than 86 million people in Europe use products supplied by T-Mobile and Deutsche Telekom, according to the firm.
