Law change could see further use of Wi-Max
A change in licensing laws is being considered by Ofcom that could allow UK Broadband to implement wireless mobile services across the country.
It would see the possibility of Wi-Max (worldwide interoperability for microwave access) being taken up by a larger number of users.
If current restrictions on licensing laws are removed and the Wireless Telegraphy Act amended, Ofcom states, then further usage of the technology will be encouraged.
Under current laws, wireless access is only available over the 3.5 GHz band. UK broadband stipulates that greater flexibility would become apparent should the guidelines be relaxed.
Ofcom also states that consumers would benefit from the change and that the use of the spectrum would be optimised.
The body said that once it has made a practical decision regarding the laws then this would be announced.
In related news, last month the EU put a cap on the cost of mobile roaming charges for users in countries abroad.
