EU ruling puts cap on mobile roaming charges
It is widely predicted that many mobile telecoms operators will now have to switch to broadband and fixed-line operations after the European parliament voted in favour of capping mobile charges abroad.

Under the new ruling, mobile charges are to be cut by up to 70 per cent.

The decision to regulate charges is now expected to have a knock-on effect as operators look to exploit the market in other ways, which is good news for the general public and business customers, say officials at the EU Roaming Regulation.

"Europe's internal market will finally become truly borderless, even for mobile phone bills," said Viviane Reding, EU telecoms commissioner.

"This means that already from this summer, mobile phone customers will start benefiting from substantially-reduced roaming charges when travelling from one EU country to another," she stated.

Experts suggest that the development will ultimately speeding up of a shift towards newer forms of technological implementation by firms.

The ruling comes as a survey released by PointTopic suggests that the number of integrated retail Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) users have doubled in the last year.
