Free Mobile Email
A new wireless service called Freedom Mail is planned for launch in Europe later this month and aims to offer users email access for free, allowing subscribers to read and send email messages on an ordinary mobile device.

Hitherto, if a mobile-phone user wanted e-mail connectivity through their mobile, they need to use a smart phone and a data service through their carrier (or use a carrier that is partnered with an e-mail client.)

But Freedom Mail subscribers will be able to retrieve email from their Internet service providers using a basic mobile phone – without the need to go through their carrier. It works when the subscriber sends a text to a specific phone number, giving their email address. They receive a return text giving a URL which can be clicked on to display the email contents. The link is bookmarked, so the user can easily check back for additional mail.

Behind Freedom Mail is SetNet, a US firm which is one of the main providers of wireless email. The free service will generate revenue via the advertisements that will be appended to messages. Initially, these will only display when sending or receiving a message – not whilst reading the emails themselves. The adverts will be targeted according to the user’s profile preferences, information which is gathered via a short survey upon initial sign-up for the service. Subscribers willing to accept the full advertising package will be given free access to additional features.

It seems likely that wireless email on mobile phones will continue to develop. Already another email service provider, Emoze, offers a free service which involves subscribers loading a piece of software onto their PC which then sends email data on to their mobile device of choice. A corporate version is also being planned.
