Mobile TV Needs Standardisation
European Commission official Viviane Reding has called for companies involved in mobile TV to adopt a single standard technology, warning that if they do not agree then the matter may be referred to the commission to decide.

Ms Reding was speaking at the Cebit technology fair in Germany last week. Phone companies around the world have been trialling the broadcast of TV shows onto mobile handsets in a bid to discover how much consumers need or want this facility. There is every chance that Europe could become a world leader in this new market, but, according to Ms Reding, only if some kind of standardisation is adopted soon.

Regarding the technology behind mobile TV she said “The industry should agree on one standard. I think there's no more time to lose here.”

The European Commission helped set up the European Mobile Broadcasting Council last year in a drive towards establishing a standard technology for the industry but as yet it seems the key players have yet to decide on clear strategy.

Ms Reding commented “I could mandate the standard but I do not want to do that.” She added that the DVB-H standard, developed with the aid of around £27 million in EC funding, looked set to be the favourite as it has already been adopted by 17 EU member countries. She went on to impose a summer 2007 deadline for the industry to agree on a standard, adding “I hope they agree because I would really not like to intervene with regulatory measures.”
