Mobile Phone Laws Change
Yesterday (Tuesday) saw the introduction of stricter penalties for drivers using hand-held mobile phones. Offenders will automatically get 3 points on their licence and the fine has doubled from £30 to £60. Statistics show drivers are 4 times more likely to crash if they are trying to hold a conversation on their mobile phone.
In the case of heavy vehicles – buses and coaches for example – courts will have the power to dish out a maximum fine of £2500. The maximum fine for a car driver will be £1000 and offenders could also be disqualified from driving.
Mobile phone use was linked to 13 road deaths in 2005 so the changes in the law have generally been welcomed by safety lobbyists. That said, the AA have suggested the new measures may not be strong enough to put off persistent offenders. The organisation believe too few motorists are making the connection between mobile use and prison terms handed out for dangerous driving, and say employers should ensure employees out on the roads are sticking to the rules.
An AA road safety spokesman added: "Police can trace phone records to establish use during a journey that ended in a crash."
