New Mobile Memory Chip
South Korean electronics giant Samsung have developed a new memory chip for mobile products which is smaller and uses less power than previous chips. It’s a development that will undoubtedly affect a wide range of mobile devices, including phones, digital cameras, portable games and media players.
The first 1-gigabit DRAM chip has been developed by Samsung using 80-nanometer process technology and is claimed to be 20% thinner than comparable existing chipsets – typically a stack 512MB dies - as well as using around 30% less power.
The new chip is claimed to be more cost effective than other high-density chips and could ultimately find its way into a huge range of mobile products.
The company plans to begin production soon and aim to start shipping the new chips in the 2nd quarter this year.
The new chip technology also features a temperature sensing device that maximises the self-refresh cycle. This contributes to reduced power drain in standby mode, giving the 30% reduction in power usage claimed by Samsung. The chip can also be combined with Flash.
