Networking in Berkshire
Since launching Moonsail Ltd back in 2004, I’ve used a number of methods and media in my quest to tell the world about the copywriting and web design work we do. I’ve tried advertising in print and online, locally and nationally. I’ve tried sending mailshots to previous work colleagues and following up with a phone call a few days later. I’ve tried scanning through business directories in search of potential customers and when I find a likely organisation, send them some information by post and follow up soon after. I even tried several weeks of intensive cold-calling (around 60 calls per day at one time). And I’ve also done a fair amount of networking too – again, on and offline.
Towards the end of last year, I decide to do some brief analysis of these different marketing methods to determine what was working and what wasn’t. I was convinced the mailshots, follow-ups, and cold-calling had proved successful but guess what? I was surprised to find that only 3 customers had been found this way despite the days or even weeks of hard work invested. Results from advertising were less clear – although I’d had almost no results from advertising at all, I HAD landed my biggest project through an advert placed in my local free paper. But that was more down to sheer luck than anything else.
What surprised me even more, was that something like 90% of my customers had come to me as a result of my networking efforts, either directly or indirectly. And a high proportion of that business (sorry I don’t have exact figures) has come through my involvement with Business in Berkshire – which is one of the reasons I’m such an enthusiastic advocate. For me, it’s certainly one of the most highly effective ways to get your message out there.
