People & Showbiz 1952 HM the Queen took up residence at Buckingham Palace. 1961 Alan B Shepherd Jr became the first American in space when he was sent up 115 miles above the earth where he stayed for 15 minutes. General Events 1760 The first public hanging took place in Tyburn in London, when Earl Ferrers was executed for murdering his steward. 1930 Amy Johnson took off from Croydon on her historic flight to Austalia. She would arrive 19 days later to become the first woman to make a solo flight from England to Australia. 1983 The discovery of a new comet was announced at a meeting in London of the Royal Society. 1995 Crime on the London Underground rose by 7% in 1994/1995. The London Tourist Board was demanding action from the police to stem the rise. 1997 John Redwood joined the battle for the Tory Party leadership, saying his resignation after his defeat by John Major in 1995 was a strength because he could not be blamed for any recent Tory failures. 1999 America suffered its first casualties of the Kosovan crisis when2 US Air Force pilots were killed as their Apache helicopter crashed on a training mission in Albania. |
