MiniMoonsailors – Keeping The Harmful Rays At Bay
With the recent spell of long hot summer days, scorching weather, and escalating UV indexes, we’ve been noticing plenty of advertising on TV telling us to protect ourselves and our children from the harmful rays of the sun.

That’s sound advice of course. The sun produces invisible rays (ultraviolet A and B) - that can cause short- and long-term skin damage. Although the immediate effects are obvious – sunburn - medical experts also believe that over-exposure to the sun in childhood or adolescence is a major cause of skin cancer and premature skin aging later in life. There is also evidence to suggest UVA rays may weaken the immune system.

Fortunately it’s fairly easy to minimize the sun's harmful effects. Using sunscreens and sun-protective clothing can reduce your children's risk of skin damage later in life.

It's important to understand the labeling information on sun protection products and shop carefully before heading to the beach. This is one thing we found when we were researching products for the MiniMoonsailors range – and that’s why everything we stock offers the highest possible protection against UV rays.

Here’s a few tips to help protect your children from the sun:
  • Always keep them well covered up with a good quality sun cream. Again, read labels carefully to ensure the product is really up to the job.

  • Dress children for maximum protection. UV protective swimwear and sunhats with brims can be worn on the beach. Choose a lightweight beach robe to cover delicate skin after swimming. Look for the UPF rating to ensure sufficient protection.

  • Choose sunglasses that help screen out both UVA and UVB rays. Remember, wearing sunglasses which don’t offer adequate protection is worse than wearing no sunglasses at all.

  • Keep babies younger than six months out of the sun.
