Developing your potential – Let’s talk about it …
On Monday evening I attended Maidenhead Speakers Club, which is held every second and fourth Monday of the month. The club is an established club and part of Toastmasters International (please note not the red coated Guild of Toastmasters). It is a friendly and relaxed club held in the Kidwells Centre, Maidenhead.

The Toastmasters Vision is as follows:
‘Toastmasters International empowers people to achieve their full potential and realise their dreams. Through our member clubs, people throughout the world can improve their communication and leadership skills, and find the courage to change.’

For a reasonable membership fee this particular club offers many benefits – a great opportunity to improve and develop speaking skills, the chance to try out newly acquired skills in a safe learning environment, the support and guidance of experienced speakers, an opportunity to listen to educational, inspirational and humorous speeches from club members and make new colleagues and friends. The standard of speeches covers a broad spectrum – from ‘the thought of standing up there in front of an audience terrifies me’ to ‘actually I did enjoy giving that particular speech’. The diversity of speeches never ceases to amaze me. The originality of material and delivery of speeches is often inspiring. There is great learning from simply listening to what other people have to say (the development of yet another skill for some of us!).

New members are always welcome and encouraged to come along for a few evenings before they decide to join. So if ‘improving your presentation skills’ is still on your New Year Resolution list …… opportunity knocks at Maidenhead Speakers Club. For those of you sitting quite smugly with lame excuses like ‘too far away from where I live’. You may be interested to note that a new club has just opened in Windsor; another clubs are available in Beaconsfield, Reading, Newbury…. any more lame excuses?

The next Maidenhead Speakers Club meeting is Monday 11 April starting at 7.30pm. I look forward to meeting you there.
