Mary, Mary quite contrary … how does your garden grow? |
I do not claim to be an accomplished gardener. I do however enjoy pottering around in the garden - planting up pots, creating little artistic displays with flowers and foliage and trying to have a little colour here and there throughout the year. There is however one little spot in my garden that always presents me with a challenge. The ‘challenge spot’ is there between the fence and the garden shed …not too large, not too small, just enough space to plant a ‘little something’!
The point about this ‘challenge spot’ is that it does just that – challenge! I have tried to grow several different flowers in the past without success. Year after year the only plant that succeeds is mint which works beautifully with a long cool summer drink! For me, there is something about a challenge, particularly one which shouts from the earth ‘Lady, forget it there’s no way you are going to get anything else from here. Flowers? Colours? Artistic? There’s nothing worth growing here!’ I’ve tried… and tried… and tried! Flowers like people can be encouraged to grow and develop. True this may take time, a little patience and occasionally a lot of perseverance. The good news is that when you do apply the necessary nutrients to a growing plant or appropriate guidance to the person, it does make for a very positive outcome - a healthy and colourful plant and a more motivated and positive person. I invite you to try it and see for yourself. As I look out at my garden I’m quite proud of the bright yellow daffodils growing in the ‘challenge spot’… a pleasing and successful outcome for me this year. |
