Networking, Motherhood and Essay writing

(Picture shows Mary - that's Dave presenting - its Mary's rear head view!)
Those of you, who know me, know that when I’m not working as a Human Resources professional, I’m training to become an Integrative Arts therapist in my spare time (the time fitted in somewhere between work and life balance!). ‘What’s an Integrative Arts therapist?’ I hear you ask. I must confess that I hadn’t heard of one until I started this course in September, last year. In its basic form – a therapist who uses different art forms – music, movement, sand play, puppetry, poetry, clay, art in their work with children, adolescents and adults – an integrative approach to therapy. Maybe one day I’ll be able to explain all the different theoretical perspectives, but not today.

I came across The Institute of Arts in Therapy and Education (IATE) based in London, through networking. It happened at a time when I was at that ‘there must be something else’ stage in one’s life journey. Sound familiar? And there was …there is … and I am … getting there! What this means is for the next four years I will be working my way through college, endeavouring to keep gainfully employed by Fraser HR and maintain the Success Ladies network with my good friend and colleague, Ute.

I’ve always been a great believer in the power of networking, initially when I started in business myself nearly five years ago and now as my business and personal lives move on. I’ve met and still do meet some great people with whom I’ve worked, shared knowledge and partnered in business. There’s a lot to be said for investing time and energy in building good business relationships and not just using networking events as a business card collection hobby like stamp collecting.

Whilst struggling with a rather challenging essay to write recently, I shared the ‘experience’ with a fellow networker. Not only had she qualified a few years ago with an MA in the said subject, she offered her services to coach me in the art of essay writing! The power of networking and a WIN/WIN for us both – for me much needed help with essay construction and for her stimulation for the brain (her words not mine!) awaiting motherhood, for the second time!

My questions of curiosity are:
What talents do you keep hidden that others might benefit from?
What would happen if you released those talents to the universe?

Must go …essay to complete!
