The Post Office …a monument to the past? |
The Post Office …a monument to the past?
During the summer we (me and the man) booked a little cottage in Inverness–shire, Scotland … not far from the infamous Loch Ness. It was a great opportunity to relax, walk, fish, read and generally chill out and ponder on some of the great mysteries of life and the universe. And I have been told there are many! We travelled ‘over the sea to Skye’, via the bridge this time! On previous visits to Skye we travelled by ferry from the mainland to the island. I must confess that there was a certain ‘something’ missing. Gone was the romance of travelling across the sea to the ‘misty isle’ via the ferry (as in The Skye Boat song!) However, times change and it was pleasing to note the benefits to the local community as a result of the improvements and investment. A stop at the local post office (picture enclosed) did make me think about some of the changes in our lifetime, in particular, communication. With the rapid development of communication technology, I wonder if the post office will become a monument to the past? Will we resort to speedy email and instant messaging? Will ‘the art of letter writing’ become extinct? I enjoy reading a good old-fashioned hand written letter. For me, to receive such a letter from friend or family is delightful. Although, I must confess that when I received a beautiful e-birthday card this week, I was very impressed to see it arrive before me - draw a beautiful picture and write a message from my friend – like magic! Oh, I can hear the ‘tekkies’ tutting as I write. But is it as ‘cherishable’ ? If this post office could talk, what stories would it tell? What happy letters have been posted there? What sad letters have been posted? What letters do you write? What difference do your cards and letters make to the person you send them do? What do the words say? When was the last time you sat down and wrote a letter? What would happen if you did? Go on, write one and let me know what happens. Post Office by frasersfotos www.frasercs.com/frasersfotos |
