What’s the connection between a gorilla and a hidden opportunity?
It’s unlikely that you will be asked this at the next quiz evening however a question, which intrigued me about a book I received last week. Richard Wiseman s book, ‘Did You Spot The Gorilla?’ makes for a motivating and thought provoking read. Professor Wiseman began his working life as an award-winning professional magician and now heads a research unit based within the Psychology Department at the University of Hertfordshire. In his book Wiseman talks about the psychological blind spots that make us miss the obvious and how we can train ourselves to recognise hidden opportunities and spot the gorilla. Opportunities, which are readily available to us, if only we would notice! Have you ever regretted missing a good opportunity? What happens when we see the opportunities in our personal and professional lives? What difference does this make to what we do and how we do it? What would happen if we changed the way we do things instead of doing what we always do? Let me leave those questions with you ….
