Teaching old dogs new tricks |
When was the last time you updated your skill set? Are you still doing things the way you always do? Result – do what you always do – get what you always get! Do you believe that ‘you can’t teach an old dog new tricks’? Well I believe that even old dogs can learn new tricks so long as they are willing to learn and invest the time – they can and they do!
Creativity, in my opinion is a wonderful skill and one I’m particularly keen on developing at present, and with that in mind I enrolled on a basket-making course in Norfolk with Adrian who runs The Norfolk Basket Company. We met at a craft fair earlier in the year at Fawley Court and I was very impressed by his willow basketwork - garden baskets, log baskets, shopping baskets, kitchen storage baskets and more. ‘I wonder if I could make something like that?’ I quietly thought to myself as I admired the craftwork. A conversation with Adrian led me to signing up for one of his courses in Norfolk and I spent the weekend in beautiful North Norfolk making baskets. As a beginner I found the two-day course (Saturday and Sunday) great fun, a little frustrating on occasions – (was the weave one in front and two behind or was it two in front and one behind?), very relaxed environment, a great opportunity to try something new and different, and meet some lovely people. Group sizes are small and this works well. Adrian is a great tutor and accommodates the different learning abilities of the group with great ease. Result – the proud owner of two baskets at the end of the weekend! It had been an opportunity to visit and enjoy the beautiful Norfolk County and have lots of fun too. I may be tempted to go back and develop some of those weaving techniques and develop my creativity even further … What are you doing to develop your skill set?
