Hello music lovers everywhere
Sorry you haven't had an update recently but my business email went down for close on 48 hours and couple this with the general day to day stuff that we all have to handle, I've only just reached the point where I can relax a little, enjoy the view through my conservatory window and listen to some of my favourite music whilst I compose this latest missive. I've rediscovered a favourite artist of mine, Nils Lofgren, who I got to meet as a student and got to interview for our student mag, Wolf Cry (Wolverhampton University). I'll be playing a track (or maybe two from Nils tomorrow at Danesfield School summer fete) which wil be broadcast live online.

Talking of our online broadcasting, lots of technical work and content planning has been going on of late. Considering we only decided to set up as an online radio station 4 weeks ago, we're about to do our fourth live broadcast and we've been providing our eclectic MarlowFM Jukebox 24/7 apart from the odd glitch which you have to accept when we're on a learning curve. I say we, when in fact it's our leader, Time Ashburner, MD and Official Technical Wizard who has managed to get MarlowFM Online this far... I just do the 'fluffy bits' on the peripheral.

Our web site Guru, Mike Henson, said to me in a conversation about the latest updates to the web site that he was pleased with the number of repeat visitors we were getting to the web site considering the timescale we're looking at, but he did say something that hit home to me and something that had been troubling me if I was being totally honest with myself.

'OK... (he said) we've got the MarlowFM Jukebox playing music 24/7, but I can listen to my iPod set on shuffle and know for certain that I'll like everything I hear because I've loaded the music myself. Good point. But the MarlowFM music library has far more tracks loaded than even the biggest capacity MP3 player can store, so you're more likely to be able to catch stuff that not many other radio stations are playing because they all have to follow a format.

Our format is that we want to embrace every and any musical genre we possibly can, but as a community radio station, it's vital that we embrace and involve the community we're trying to serve. and we're not going to do that by simply providing computer driven music, albeit quality stuff.

Our plan is to introduce as much live and pre recorded programmes between 6.00pm Friday evening and midnight Sunday as we can, promote the schedule, so that everyone will know when to log on to catch whatever they're into, be it the Folk and World Music Show, Jazz, Big Band or Top Downloads of The Week Show. We're also talking to various people about providing regular Podcasts on different subjects... law...food... history of Marlow... etc which will be available to download free at any time.

Ideally, I'd like to have live presenters as much as possible Mon-Fri as well, but I feel that's probably asking too much at this moment in time when we're relying purely on volunteers. Still, I have suggested to Tim, who was enthusiastic about the idea, that we designate certain days or maybe mornings and afternoons as being the 'Tamla Motown' day, Rock 'n' Roll Day, David Bowie morning followed by the Beatles afternoon. They would still be set to random play, but at least we could publicise a schedule and more people will be inclined to listen in if they're going to hear their particular favourite artist or genre of music.
So, if you fancy hearing your fave music or artist on MarlowFM, let me know and we'll add any suggestions to the pot.

The biggest technical hitch we had for allowing people to present a programme from anywhere has now been resolved. We've set up a web site where those who have expressed a desire to present on MarlowFM will be able to download the appropriate software, load it onto their PC (not sure if there's a Mac version available - I'll check) and as long as they have a suitable microphone, away they go. People will be able to access the computer driven programme, switch it to manual and then take over to do their own thing (as long as it's legal etc).

Anyway, I have to do my chores 'What chores ?' I hear you say... 'Mines a PImms if you see me at the Marlow Regatta next week, or if you're coming along to Danesfield tomorrow, a pint of anything alcoholic.

Keep the buzz...

Paul.

P.S. If you'd like a button badge and car sticker, all you have to do now is give us your address details and we'll send them out to you FREE of charge. How can you refuse!
