New Faces Win ‘My Back Yard’ Competition

The London Photographic Association’s latest competition, the documentary-focused ‘My Back Yard2’, saw Gold go to two LPA newcomers.

Gold Single Winner - Keita Yasukawa, originally from Japan

The single entry category was won by new member Keita Yasukawa whilst the winner of the series entry went to Bjorn Veno, who has only just graduated from the University College for Creative Arts.

Gold Series Winner - Bjorn Veno, Norway

Honors also went to:

Single image winners

Silver - Marrigje de Maar Netherlands

Bronze - Luke Peters London

Series image winners

Silver - Massimiliano Boschini Italy

Bronze - Bianca Gutberlet France

Keita Yasukawa, originally from Japan, had his interest in photography sparked by the sights he encountered on the two-year journey he took when he left Japan. He’s now been a photographer for eight years and is based in London. Very new to the LPA, he decided to enter ‘My Back Yard’ on a whim. Seeing the competition advertised, the title immediately made him think of an image in his portfolio and so he decided to be proactive. His winning entry made the deadline with just 15 minutes to spare! “It was a quick decision to enter the competition,” says Keita, “but I’m really glad I did!”

Bjorn Veno recently graduated and his winning series of images is his graduation piece. In the series, Bjorn juxtaposes the exact places he played as a child with images of him as a grown man, showing the disparity between our childhood dreams of adulthood and the reality of being fully-grown. The fantastic, fairy-tale settings are the woods and fields of his childhood Norway, and lend a mythical backdrop to the allegorical theme. The series took a year to plan with test shots being taken last summer and the final images put together at Easter.

Both artists chose to join the LPA and enter ‘My Back Yard’ because of the exposure and support that the association can give them. “I see entering the LPA’s competitions as a great way to promote myself and my work,” says Bjorn Veno. “It’s a way to know that people are getting access to your work.” Keita Yasakawa agrees, saying: “Being part of the LPA is a good way to advertise myself, on top of having my own webspace. After all, the LPA is more well-known than I am!”

Both artists see the LPA as a key factor in driving their careers forward, appreciating the exposure that both the online exhibition and Calumet exhibition will bring them. Both are keen to enter more LPA competitions and see them as a fantastic way of generating awareness of their work, making contacts and opening doors in the industry that might otherwise be closed to them. Keita and Bjorn’s experiences with ‘My Back Yard’ show the benefits of being part of the LPA: the support of the industry association is more powerful than going it alone!

‘My Back Yard’ Private View
‘My Back Yard’ opened at Calumet Photographic on Tuesday 10 October with a private view. The exhibition, now open to the public, comprises 46 images. There are 10 series of four and six single image entries along with the six finalist series on screen in the gallery.

This exhibition, which challenges our view of the places we call home, will stay in London for at least a month before travelling to Manchester where it will become the centrepiece for Calumet’s refurbished store and gallery.
