Have you ever been in gaol?

This question was asked by a keynote speaker at a convention of 1,500 people in America. The speaker paused and you could hear a pin drop: after a few seconds, wheelchair bound he said....”this chair has been a prison for me.” But not anymore.... “the important thing in life is not what happens to you but what you do about it.”

All too often we are imprisoned, not by some debilitating physical situation, but by self-imposed limitations brought about by years of conditioning. We play it safe; challenge can mean failure and we never raise the bar in respect of our aspirations.
Let’s assume that the world is divided into two types of people, those who find or, fall into a comfort zone; and the restless few who seek adventure, self esteem, public esteem and the freedom that emanates from financial success.

What distinguishes these two types?

It is personal leadership.

People in their comfort zone hum to the prevailing tones of the crowd and satisfy their needs and desires by falling in line with the needs and desires of others. The restless however, are driven differently; they are much more focused on what is truly important to them. In the event of a need for oxygen in-flight, aircrew always ask adults to fix the oxygen mask on themselves before applying them to their young children. People with personal leadership qualities are not necessarily selfish, but they know that you cannot lead others if you cannot lead yourself.

What is the distinguishing characteristic of personal leadership?

Attitude.

Most people spend moments of their life being focused; they achieve something and then fall back into their comfort zone. Consistent achievers continually re-focus and make sure that their actions predominantly reflect that focus. The good news is that a slight change in attitude can produce a dramatic increase in results, and it is that where a good coach can be indispensible.

What do coaches do and what separates them from the rest?

Imagine that you want to learn to ride a bike.

- A Consultant recommends the right machine, discussing your needs and helps to specify the shiny 21-speed mountain bike.

- A Counsellor helps you to work through and get over your disappointment that the consultant only specified front suspension rather than the full-on front and rear suspension that you envied.

- A Therapist helps you to heal your deep fear of not being able to ride a bike and being considered a failure by your Tour de France winning father.

- A Trainer lectures and demonstrates to you how to mount, ride and control the bike.

- A Mentor encourages you to follow him in joining a road racing team, to experiment at downhill and to try the Land’s End to John O’Groats long distance ride that he did some time ago. He also gives you some tips about where to stop for the best pint on the route and who to use as support.

- A Friend joins you for bike rides and you chat and debate the merits of your technology and have fun.

- A Coach runs along behind you, holding the saddle and encouraging you until you suddenly realise that he has let go and you are riding on your own.

Leadership Management UK coaches you to achieve outsanding personal leadership.
