Top Tips & Announcement for 2008
There are some very exciting changes afoot at Life Doctor so this may be the last 'nutrition style update' you get for some time! Our passion for food and all things healthy has lead to our involvement in a new local cafe in Berkshire.
The Farm Cafe is under going a refurbishment in January 2008 for around 6 weeks at the Ashridge Manor Garden Centre in Wokingham. It will then open under new management for Breakfast, Lunches and snacks using fresh local produce and featuring handmade hot and cold food. With the added advantage of an onsite Nutrition Adviser you can be sure to get your choice of healthy or more indulgent options! It will also be the ideal venue for a cosy coffee, a meeting or even group lunch event.
We'll let all our local customers know more about the cafe in due course, but suffice to say we hope we'll see you there in the New Year for Breakfast, Lunch or networking!
Here are our last few Top Tips for 2007:
Top Tips For Reducing the Festive Calories
- Eat the white turkey meat as it's leaner and avoid the skin
- Steam your vegetables and avoid or go easy on adding the butter
- Try vegetarian stuffings made with breadcrumbs nuts and apricots, they're much lower fat than normal or sausagemeat versions.
- You already know about using an oil spray for roast potatoes - this time of year is no different!
- Instead of Christmas pudding why not try a good fruit cake from someone like the Village Bakery who use a lot less sugar and more natural ingredients?
- Top your pudding with low fat greek yoghurt or creme fraiche and save up to 30g of fat by not using cream or brandy butter!
- Watch the mince pies - they can be deadly or try making your own using mincemeat and filo pastry - you could eat a quarter of the fat and calories using this simple trick.
- Failing all else and you really want to have it all - why not have a small portion of everything so you get all the tastes without over eating - just watch those portions!
Top Tips for a Happier Christmas
- Stop rushing around like a mad person - step back and write a list of the things that REALLY matter and forget the rest, it's only a couple of days after all!
- Delegate or pay someone else! If you can enlist a friend or family member to take some of the strain then do it - time is what you're really after. Failing that - pay someone else - whether it's ironing, cleaning or online shopping these services all exist so do USE them.
- Don't be a perfectionist - aim for 'nice and tidy' not a full spring clean, nobody will honestly notice.
- Rope in your better half and children, nobody says it's one person's responsibility to make christmas perfect - many hands will make light work.
- Get some rest, too many late nights will make you feel frazzled and look bleary. Get the beauty sleep and gain more energy for the next day.
- If there's some boozy nights ahead buy some Milk Thistle tincture from your local health food store, follow the instructions and help your body deal with the booze quicker (and hopefully avoid a hangover too!)
- Ward off the dreaded Christmas colds with plenty of oranges for Vitamin C, fruit & veg for nutrients and echinacea just in case!
Wishing you a wonderful festive season and looking forward to welcoming you in the Farm Cafe in the New Year!
