X Factor is big hope for ITV revenues |

X Factor is big hope for ITV revenues. ITV lost a ton of money on the Friends Reunited deal and TV advertising revenues have dropped hugely. ITV has sold Friends Reunited for £25m, despite having agreed to pay a total of £175m for it in 2005.
Online however things are starting to gain momentum. The Guardian reports ITV's results for the first six months of the year showed that ITV.com's revenues had doubled year on year to £10m. Video views on ITV.com show a dramatic increase compared with the first half of 2008, from 31m to 116m. Screen Digest predicts that in 2009 Channel 4 will make £9.3m from its online TV service, 4oD, and Channel Five's Demand Five service will bring in £1.9m. Checking the number of pages ITV has indexed by the major search engines and links coming back in we find: • Google has around 25,000 pages indexed with 2,000 links coming back in • Yahoo paints a different picture, over 80,000 pages and 80,000 links • Bing gives us 26,000 pages for ITV Yahoo does seem to count every link and Google has its own TV channel with YouTube so will be more selective. 113m in six months would imply they are over 20m a month as I write and my guess, the energy they are putting into X Factor and other key programmes, adding lots of video entertainment, all with a 30 second advert before the main clip to boost revenues, will ensure that figure grows and grows. Having the videos online means that viewers can clock in at a time that suits to watch their favourite show... BT are joining the party with online programmes and ironically, ITV is currently carrying banner ads for BT’s service! The numbers imply a cost of around 5p per visitor... these are obviously random visitors, those with a computer and a busy schedule who are looking to catch up on a TV show, happy to watch a short ad before the main event. In the online world we inhabit, we can drive those interested in what you have to a website with your name all over it... and with a little energy from your marketing department your micro sites will be producing new business leads for your sales team to follow up and turn into paying customers.
