Web 2.0: benefit from joining the Twittering classes

Do you Tweet? Perhaps you're one of the many people who "can't see the point" of micro-blogging site Twitter or maybe you "don't have the time". Journalist and copywriter Nicola Joyce joined Twitter yesterday. Within 24 hours, she'd found five case studies for an article and got one commission. Here are her top tips for making Twitter work for you.

Twitter allows you to engage with like-minded people, transmit opinions and keep an eye on how your product and brand are viewed by consumers. It ensures you're at the very cutting-edge of breaking news and keeps you firmly in the loop. You'll know stuff (useful or not!) before anyone who's not on Twitter does.

You can use Twitter to find out what people are saying about you, your brand or your market. You can find people who are interested in your hobbies, and even drill down enough to find people who like it in your local town (there are no other Channel swimmers in Wokingham, apparently).

You can use it to get help. Here's where Twitter excelled for me within 24 hours. My webmail was down: I "tweeted" about it, and within 5 minutes I had several people responding with a technical solution. I desperately needed case studies to finish off an article I was writing. After Tweeting about my needs, I had not one but five offers of case studies from PRs. Fantastic. That's several hundred pounds worth of work, right there. Thanks, Twitter.

You can "listen in" on people in a certain company, marketplace or job sector. Following them will be an invaluable tool for anyone looking to change careers, boost their brand or enhance the power of their PR.

You can spread your message wide. Tweet about anything, and your followers will hear you. They can "re-tweet" (copy your message and credit it to you) and their followers will hear it. In this way, your message, opinion or question can be broadcast to thousands of readers.

You'll read about stuff you'd never otherwise know about. Much of this will be funny or interesting but ultimately useless. But it only takes on bit of information, one link or one contact to create a winning idea or spark a new bit of business.

Whilst it can be used to idle away the hours, it can also save you loads of time. Running late and need to know about the state of the roads? Tweet about it. Someone will let you know about that pile-up on the A3. Can't find that certain something that your child wants for their birthday? Don't spend hours trawling online shops. Just Tweet about it. Someone is bound to know where you can buy it.

Have I convinced you? If you decide to join up, come and follow me. I'm already there.

Hello, thank you for taking the time to visit and read this page.
