Channel swimming journalist
Local journalist Nicola Joyce has become the 83rd person to swim the English Channel two times.
Nicola, a leading swimming journalist, swam around Jersey last year and raised funds for the Bracknell, Wokingham, Ascot and Districts branch of Samaritans. She swam the English Channel for the first time in 2004 and again in August.
Her next aim is to to swim from Jersey to France, a distance of around 18 miles. To date, only twelve people have completed the swim since 1966.
"I love open-water swimming," says Nicola, from Wokingham. "Most people can't understand why I do a sport which involves spending hours in cold water wearing nothing but a swimsuit, but I enjoy the fact that you have to be dedicated in order to succeed. I've even come to love the cold water!"
Nicola, who offers local businesses copywriting and PR services, is a journalist specialising in swimming, fitness and sport. She's written for a range of consumer magazines including 220 Triathlon, Triathlete's World, Women's Fitness, Ultrafit, Swimming Times.
Her most recent commission was from Coast magazine, which saw her travel to the Scilly Isles and swim with seals.
