Nicola Joyce: channel swimming journalist

Copywriting Lexicon's Nicola Joyce is an open-water swimmer and has swum across the English Channel, around Jersey, the length of Windermere and various other swims. This section has training information, first-hand experiences, event reports and images from her swimming adventures around the world.

Nicola has compiled the top-ten FAQs about channel swimming and attempted to answer them below. However, if you want to know more or are interested in getting into the sport, do contact her via this site. She'll be delighted to put you in touch with the right people, tell you more, or even take you for a swim if you're feeling up for it!

Check back soon for more. She's working on copy for some clients at the moment...
What is Nicola training for this year?
Training has started in earnest for this year's swims. Nicola's main goal this season is a swim from Jersey to France in September, a distance of some 18 miles (although of course tidal push and pull may add more distance to the swim).     more

Channel swimming FAQs
From the inevitable "Do you cover yourself in goose-fat?" and "What do you eat?" to the existential "Why do you do it?", Nicola rounds up the most popular questions about Channel swimming and answers them for you. Remember, there's no such thing as a stupid question (apart from the ones about being eaten by sharks; they're a bit silly). If you have a question that's not on the list - ask it! Contact Nicola via this site.     more

Surprise second Channel swim - August 2008
Nicola didn't tell many people, but she booked another Channel swim this season. On Wednesday 6 August she swam to France, again.     more

Isle of Man relay - June 2008
Nicola took part in the inaugural Isle of Man relay on Saturday 14 June with five other swimmers. The swim was aborted after 22 miles and 12 hours due to F6 winds, but they did see sharks and seals!     more

Long-distance training trip in Gozo, April 2008
220 Triathlon sent Nicola to cover Swimtrek's dedicated long-distance training trip on Gozo in April 2008. It was a perfect gig for her as she is currently training for a Jersey-to-France swim later in the year.     more

World Winter Swimming Championships - February 2008
Not the sea, and hardly long-distance, but very cold! The World Winter Swimming Championships migrated from its native Finland to Tooting Bec lido, and Nicola was there. She took part in both the traditional "head-up breastroke" ice-swimming event (and came 7th in the world in her age group) and the freestyle. Brrr!     more

Round-Jersey - September 2007
There's a lot of backstory to this one but she won't bore you with it now. Suffice to say that - after many challenges - Nicola finally swam around Jersey on 15 September 2007. Over 40 miles in 12 hours (and one second). Phew.     more

Windermere - July 2007
As part of her training for swimming round Jersey, Nicola popped up to her old Uni stomping ground and swam the length of Windermere (10.5 miles). Into a headwind the whole way. The swim took a mind-numbing 6 hours and 41 minutes.     more
