August 2009 - under the knife

Nicola had to pack as much as she could into the first few weeks of August, as she was due to go into hospital for surgery on the 26th. Freelancers don't get sick pay, you know!

She started the month by writing an online profile for two photographers. Her longterm working relationship with the London Photographic Association means that photographers often come to her for webcopy, CVs and profiles. This month, she wrote copy for Karan Kapoor and Jimi Rae.

She submitted an interview with Olympic gold medallist Maarten van der Weijden to 220 Triathlon magazine (it's in the current issue of the magazine) and also did a kit test for their November issue. That was the last time she'll be swimming for a while...

Her husband went to Canada for 10 days to take part in the brutal Trans Rockies mountain bike race - 7 days of biking in the Canadian Rockies, covering 600kms (and 12,000kms of climbing!) in that time. She tried to keep herself extra-busy whilst he was away.

Heading South, she visited friends in Eastbourne, and all three of them took part in the South Coast Triathlon (her friends both won their age groups. She...er...didn't!)

She then went North, to Loughborough University's famous athletics facility where she met, trained with and interviewed World Champion triathlete Tim Don for a feature to appear in next month's Triathlete's World magazine. It's the first time she's conducted an interview during a post-run ice-bath, but quite possibly won't be the last.

She also submitted an article to Triathlete's World about the importance of athletes' support crews during the Enduroman Double Iron, this country's first double Ironman-distance triathlon.

She wrote webcopy for regular clients Absolute Health and Safety Solutions as well as Assorti's monthly client e-newsletter.

She picked her husband up from Heathrow and then, just a few hours later, had to drive to Devon for four days. She was down there spending time with the RNLI beach lifeguards for an article to appear in a future issue of Coast magazine. She had an amazing time and left with a huge amount of respect for the amount of training, in-depth learning and high level of skill the lifeguards have. It most definitely is not all about sunning yourself on the beach in a pair of red Speedos!

Nicola came back from Devon on the 21st, spent some time with her husband (she hadn't seen him properly since the 6th!) and then, on the 26th, went into hospital for a hernia repair operation. What a month! Still, the enforced rest should mean that September is a bit less hectic!
