May 2009 - gadgets and kettlebells
Nicola's journalism commissions took her to Guildford for a kettlebell training session and to London South Bank University's Human Performance Centre to interview a strength and conditioning expert.

For a feature on triathlon gadgets, she reviewed techy bits of kit including a Garmin (thank you, Lori!) and spoke to professional triathletes Tim Don and Andrea Whitcombe about the contents of their kit-bags.

For a feature about strength-training for multi-sport athletes, Nicola was coached in kettlebell training by kettlebell expert and personal trainer Charlotte Ord and interviewed various experts, including Pat Fox, Head of S&C at LSBU's Human Performance Centre. He invited her back sometime to be tested in the Centre's lab - yes, please!

Nicola also wrote a piece for Practical Parenting magazine about the importance of teaching babies and toddlers to swim, and how parents can go about it.

For Sweet magazine, she interviewed up-and-coming track athlete Dannish Khan about coping with Type 1 diabetes.

With her copywriting hat on, she wrote web-copy for local cleaning and housekeeping company Domestique, and microsite copy for Purple Cloud Purple Cloud as well as looking after her regular clients' webcopy and newsletter needs.

She was also pleased to work with British Triathlon, the federation responsible for triathlon in the home nations. She helped on an overhaul of their member magazine, Tri News, and assisted with updating web-copy whilst they waited for an internal comms staff member to start.

Just to hammer home her tri-credentials, Nicola spent two days at Dorney rowing lake, coaching novice and improving triathletes in the art of open-water swimming. She joined coaches and triathletes The Tri Life and Zoggs to advise on key skills including sighting, turning and mass starts. She'll be back there to coach at the Human Race triathlon training day on July 12th. Fancy a dip?

The two consecutive blazing-hot weekends at the end of May saw Nicola and co venturing out of the county: firstly to her home county of Kent to the wedding of her oldest friend (no, she's not elderly; they met when they were three...oh, you know what I meant!) and secondly to Oxfordshire to run the Wallingford 10K: she was 10th lady finisher and set a new 10K PB.
