December 2008 - Christmas parties and catching up

The end of the year is always a funny time to be a freelancer - clients and Editors tend to be away from their desks more than usual, so it takes longer to finish off existing work and is tricky to organise new projects. Nicola wound down in December, knowing that January would be a busy month. It wasn't all about the parties, though (at least not in the first three weeks of the month...)

In December, Nicola worked on magazine articles for various sport and fitness publications, including Women's Fitness, 220 Triathlon, Triathlete's World and Triathlon Plus. She wrote a profile piece for Sweet magazine and was thrilled to get a mention in the Star Letter of Women’s Fitness. Her first-ever piece for the magazine prompted the following response from a reader:

“Thanks to your Make A Splash article in issue 56, I'm now a regular at my local pool. Unlike many of my friends, I never learned to swim when I was younger and on holidays I've always looked on in envy as my friends go for a swim...I've thought about learning in the past but never actually looked into it as I assumed pools would only teach children.

"However, when I read about the various places that offer swimming lessons in your article, I was really excited...I'm only in my third week of lessons but am thoroughly enjoying it and I've already noticed my confidence improving..."

Result! What more can a fitness journalist whose passion is swimming ask for?

Nicola also worked on conference content for regular client CIBSE, wrote e-newsletters and web-copy for various regular and one-off clients and, most importantly, got ready for Christmas: her favourite time of year. She’s looking forward to 2009!
