August 2008 - second Channel swim |
In August, Nicola surprised everyone but her nearest and dearest by nipping out of the office on a Wednesday to swim the Channel (again). She'd been planning it for a while (in case the Jersey-to-France swim she's booked doesn't go ahead because of the awful weather) but hadn't told many people.
So, on Wednesday 6th August Nicola didn't do any work at all. Instead, she swam for 14 hours 27 minutes and ended up on the sandy beach north of Wissant. The following day she was back at her desk (OK, that's a fib, she might have used the sofa as her office that day). The downside of not telling anyone you're planning a Channel swim is that there are still deadlines to be met! During August, Nicola completed copywriting work for Business in Berkshire clients including Windsor Vehicle Leasing, Media Plant and Diamond Drilling. She wrote copy for the monthly newsletters of Assorti and the London Photographic Association, and an online profile for photographer Steve Smith's portfolio on Gallery 1839. Nicola often writes press releases and circulates them to local press to help clients get media coverage. Putting the same skills to use, she whipped up a quick release about her swim and was in the Wokingham Times the next week. She heard on the grapevine that there is a new triathlon magazine about to be launched and, using her connections, got two commissions for the first issue. If you don't ask, you don't get! The magazine's name hasn't been released yet, but she eagerly awaits the first issue when it hits the newsstands in November. Mostly, though, Nicola spent time flicking through the photos of her second Channel swim and being just a little bit proud about the fact that she's the 83rd person to swim the English Channel two times. By the way - to those of you with Business in Berkshire accounts - this goes to show how well updating your account regularly works: The day after Nicola updated her pages with news of her swim, she had a call from the Editor of Holdthefrontpage. They'd been googling for news, picked up Nicola's BinB update and wanted permission to feature the news on their site. Update your pages (or get a copywriter like Nicola to do it for you if you don't have time)! |
