2007 - Bracknell and Districts Samaritans
Samaritans are a national charity and provide confidential, non-judgemental support (over the phone, via email or face-to-face contact) to those in distress or despair. They help people to explore their feelings (which can often be difficult to talk about with family or friends, such as feelings of suicide) and don't advise, but try to help callers find their own way forward and explore the options available to them.
Nicola's local branch of Samaritans serves Bracknell, Wokingham, Ascot and Districts and is based in Bracknell. During 2007, Nicola acted as press officer for the branch, writing press releases and circulating them to local press to give the branch as much publicity as possible.
Very sadly, Bracknell Samaritans' in-house fundraising and publicity officer died suddenly in June, so Nicola's PR role became even more necessary. Nicola organised and wrote press releases and made contact with local editors in order to give Bracknell Samaritans a raised profile and regular presence. Her work led to articles being placed in the local press about the annual Sam Run (the branch's major fundraiser), about her own round-Jersey Swim (raising funds for the branch) and about the branch's need for extra listening volunteers.
