Tell us about your family days out this summer

On Sunday we went to Hong Kong family day at Ascot racecourse. Pitched as a great family day out, we’d been a few years back, when it was the “good old Ascot” and figured the sun was shining, the sky was blue, there wasn’t a cloud to spoil the view...
The kids invited a friend each and off we went to Hong Kong Day with anticipation of the fun fair, people wandering around in traditional costumes, dragons and all things Hong Kong Style to make for a great family day out. Well, there was a 10m square area in one corner of the race course with a dragon dancing in it and a bouncy play park for those under 10 with a 30 minute queue for a 5 minute play time but that was about it. There were people from Hong Kong there and many other families who had come for a fun day out. The reality was that having arrived at 1pm we left around 3pm as the kids needed more to do. Our hopes for a family fun day out at Ascot were left behind with the £78 it cost for parking, entrance, food and a small flutter. When we got back the boys played footie in the garden then went off to play PS3 and the girls listened to music & talked to their other mates on MSN. Ali and I looked at each other and asked why do we feel cheated? I may be a bit of a romantic but I’m sure businesses in the entertainment space offered more value for money in the good old days. There was recognition that if you want customers to return you needed to offer value for money and they would come back. Today it’s all about getting as much cash out of people as they can in the shortest space of time to boost the profits and keep the shareholders happy. All so clinical! Ali and I decided that perhaps the most fun would be had by inviting the kids' friends round with their parents, in the garden with a few drinks and canapés! We can then spend £100 on organic booze from Vintage Roots and that should see us through at least half a dozen relaxed, inexpensive afternoons this summer.
