They would challenge one another to contests to prove who had the strongest horse. A barn door was removed and laid flat on the ground, the horse was then hitched to it and the farmer ushered the horse to drag the door as one by one, people jumped on the door until the horse could no longer drag it. The horse pulling the most people the greatest distance was judged to be the strongest Times and machinery may have changed, but people still boast! The South West Tractor Pullers Association (SWTPA) is the predominant force in British Tractor Pulling. For those who have never heard of tractor pulling, it is a competition using highly tuned and modified tractors to pull a heavy weight transfer sledge along a 100 metre clay or dirt track. The winner being the tractor to pull the sledge the furthest. Tractor pulling is a great spectacle, and with tractors with up to 8000bhp it is often referred to as the most powerful motorsport in the world! The SWTPA run tractors in several classes: Super Farm These look very much like tractors you might see in the fields, but teams are allowed to fit one turbocharger and are limited to a maximum of 2800 RPM. The original tractor engine must be used. Designed to be a low cost class, its a good starting class for many competitors. The class weight is restricted to 3.5 tonnes max. Under 401 Prostock Again based on farm tractors, this class use the original engine, which must not exceed 401 cubic inches (6.57 litres). They are limited to one turbo charger, but there is no RPM limit. This is the next step up from Super Farm, and again the class weight is restricted to 3.5 tons max. Over 401 Prostock - This class is almost exactly the same as the Under 401 class, except engines must not exceed 510 cubic inches (8.36 litres). Again the class weight is restricted to 3.5 tons max. Modified Class In this class, almost anything goes! Any combination of engines, gearboxes and rear axles. The class is competed at 2.5 & 3.5 tonnes. Most of our Modifieds have 27 or 38 litre V12 engines from either Tanks or Aircraft. Trucks These trucks are similar to ones you may see on the road. The trucks have to have certain safety modifications for pulling. The amount of tuning allowed is unlimited and the class is weight restricted to 8.5 tonnes. The sledge: In the early days two main techniques were used. Either a dead weight was dragged, or people stood at fixed positions along the track and stepped aboard as the sled passed. Todays sledges use a complex system of gears to move weights (up to 65,000 pounds/29,000 kilograms). At the start line all the weight is over the sledges rear axles, this gives an effective weight of the sled plus zero. As the tractor travels forward, the weights are pushed towards the front of the sledge, pushing the front of the sledge into the ground until the tractor is no longer able to overcome the force of friction. The SWTPA will be running their show on both days of the Berkshire festival, from around 10am until around 5pm each day www.swtpa.co.uk SHOPPING Live Crafts Marquee Trade Stands Community Pavilion Supporting local charities & organisations.
