Touring Van Exmoor
Touring Van Exmoor

That was the search today, day 2 of our jollies... and we’re off to Porlock tomorrow as Ali thought it looked jolly nice.

Friday we set off, 3.5 hours on the M4, Windsor to Weston-Super-Mare, your ‘aving a laugh! We were still were very unsure that what seemed a great idea while under the influence at Blenheim Palace, when the van came up for auction and the vision of stepping onto the beach in the early morning before the rest of the world descended, was going to turn out a “fun” holiday.

We’re not the best at confined spaces unless surrounded by a million tons of ocean going liner!

So we collect the van at around 4:30pm... we had planned to leave at 12 but hey, were always 1 hour later than planned when in family mode. So next job, where to stay? We’d phoned up a few places the previous Friday night and they’d indicated just turn up. Just turning up isn’t the best idea when there has been a monsoon the previous week, making the land wet, wet, wet. By 5:30pm we’d tired a few places near Weston and had no luck... best eat before we turn into ravenous wolves and start taking each other’s heads off!

Welcome to the smallest Chinese in the UK... not officially but the man could cook. 30 minutes later we’re all fuelled up and pointed in the direction of Ilfracombe and a hope of safe birth! 11:30 we landed... all the car parks showing warning signs against evil van men (and women, kids and dogs)

Where to park for the night? After driving round the town considering our options in increasingly frustrated tones, much to the amusement of the local hostel dwellers, watching the world go by from the comfort of their favourite wall, prime time cross roads for “bloody” tourists searching for safe haven.

Midnight, “Let’s drive out of town and find a lay by” suggest the boss. “That’s my babe!” So off we went, up the hill and within 5 minutes we’d found a picnic spot. That’ll do nicely... and what a great view for the morning...

Saturday morning saw us wake up to a beautiful view of the Atlantic Ocean and 2 hours later we’re sorted with a hard pitch on Twitchen camp site in Woolacombe... marvellous!
