3% Enterprise Tax
Good afternoon,
Yesterday I took part in the Enterprising Britain Debate at the Victoria Plaza Hotel in London. There were 3-400 people there and it made for an excellent event with inspirational presentations and opportunities to network and ask questions.
Sky had a few cameras around the place, the FT.com and Yellow Pages were sponsoring the event, a couple of MPs were in the house and so it seemed a good idea to Make My Mark!
A teacher asked, "Why had the government stopped funding for their current business education initiative?"
I seized my opportunity and volunteered the concept of a 3% Enterprise Tax and made the following points:
There is no such thing as bad press
People could talk about it over dinner (as we don't talk anymore!)
And it would help fund enterprise education
I wanted to go on about corporates avoiding taxes and how this tax would be paid and generated locally, with all businesses taking part (not like VAT). This money would then be used to support enterprising ideas and not paid directly back to Europe like business rates.
But obviously I had not thought through all the angles on this as it had come to me in the instant I saw an opportunity to be heard on a bigger stage and grabbed it.
The reality is I plan on evolving this as a BinB voluntary tax / sponsorship which we will then manage into the enterprise market. How will we do that? Not sure yet but I know where you'll be able to find out more about it… a work in progress!
