7/7 and Beyond - Peace for our Communities
16th September 2006, 9.00am – 4.30 pm.
BULMERSHE SCHOOL, CHEQUERS ROAD, WOODLEY, READING RG5 3EL The London Bombings have thrown up hard questions for all of us. “They won’t change our way of life”, said our leaders – but they already have. Beyond the security issues lie fundamental questions: Why have some young people been so alienated that they turned to such violence? Can those like them re-discover a place within our society? Why do most of us have so few links with people of other cultures, faiths or ethnic background? How do we support Muslim leaders: by understanding the pressure they are facing and by helping them to ask the difficult questions of themselves and their communities? What role does religion play in creating conflict and division and also in dealing with it? Most Muslims in Britain are South Asian, and those who are not Muslim still experience questions and suspicion. South Asians have long experience of religious conflict and of terrorism based on religion and ideology and have wrestled with the complexities of managing a plural society. The conference will also include a distinctive youth focus: A group of around 60 teenagers of different faiths and none will take part in the first part of the Conference and will then go to a workshop to prepare a post-lunch presentation. After the presentation they and those attending the conference will break up into small groups to discuss each others findings. The key speakers will, individually go to the workshop. South Asian Development Partnership opens the event for JCI Reading members and guests – you are cordially invited to attend this conference though JCI Reading. This is an excellent opportunity to find out more about the different cultures that are around us and meet with many national community leaders! Places are limited and will be allocated on a “first come first served” basis. To book your place, print out the PDF and fill out the form by Thursday 7th of September.
